4 Tips to Prevent Ants at Your BBQ

Ohio is home to more than 14 types of ants, so it’s no surprise that homeowners struggle with ant colonies from time to time. Most species prefer to start their colonies in the yard and then make their way toward the house in search of food. Sugary foods and beverages tend to attract these pests in large numbers, especially during the summer months. Families love to enjoy the nice weather with backyard barbecues and birthdays, which provide a paradise for an ant colony. Here are several quick and easy ways to prevent ants at your BBQ if you haven’t had time to call Lawn Plus Pest Control Services for your annual extermination.

1. Spray Ant Hills with Vinegar

Ants hate the smell of vinegar and will run in the opposite direction to avoid its scent. Spray ant hills in your yard with equal parts water and vinegar, and then watch these pests go running. Just make sure you spray ant hills before you fire up the grill, to mask the smell of the food.

2. Use Cornstarch

Cornstarch is an ant’s weakness. Once it’s consumed, the powder shuts down the digestive system and ants are stopped dead in their tracks. This can be beneficial, especially if you’re planning on having sugary treats. Sprinkle a line around the perimeter of your yard or BBQ area to discourage pests during your party.

3. Keep Food Covered

Ants can pick up on the scent of food right away, especially if you have bowls of punch, and plates piled filled pies or cupcakes. To prevent them from ruining your cookout, make sure you keep food sealed in containers and transfer your punch or other sweet beverages to closed containers.

4. Clean Up Right Away

Spills, dirty utensils, and dirty plates are an open invitation to ants. To help keep your BBQ area free of pests, make sure you clean up any spills and dirty dishes right away. Put used grilling utensils in the kitchen sink and provide your guests with a sealed trash can for all of their used plates and cups.
